Soccer Aid Football Match Raises £14.6 Million For UNICEF
The biggest celebrity sporting event of the year took place recently, raising nearly £15 million for charity.
Soccer Aid has become one of the most popular charity events, with stars having travelled from all over to take part in the football match on Sunday June 11th.
This year was no different, with Lioness Jill Scott captaining the England side and Ussain Bolt being in charge of the Soccer Aid World XI FC team.
The players, which included Scarlette Douglas, Maisie Adam, Paul Scholes, Robbie Keane, Eni Aluko, Liam Payne, Mo Farah, and Tom Hiddleston among many others, competed against each other in front of an audience of 63,000 at Old Trafford.
Chief executive at the UK Committee for UNICEF Jon Sparkes said: “It was such an exciting watch to see England take on Soccer Aid World XI and topped off by raising an incredible £14.6 million which will help children worldwide have the childhoods they are entitled to.”
This year’s event saw the World XI secure its fifth consecutive win out of the 17 years it has been around.
Indeed, the event was originally founded by UNICEF UK ambassador Robbie Williams in 2006 and has raised more than £90 million since then.
Williams made up the England coaching team, along with former professional players Zavon Hines and David Seaman, and actress Vicky McClure, while Melanie C, and ex-players Robbie Keane, Jesus Perez and Austrian footballer Daniel Bachmann coached the World XI side.
The event, which was watched by millions on TV, may have inspired lots of budding footballers to step up their training, so you might need to invest in more Hummel football kits over the coming weeks.
