5 Qualities You’ll Need To Be A Good Referee

When we watch a football match, it’s not very often we pay much attention to the referee’s performance – unless, of course, they’ve made some shocking decisions in favour of the other side that is!

But while they often go unnoticed, the referee plays a pivotal role in any football match, ensuring both teams play by the rules and the fair outcome is achieved.

In fact, the referee’s job is one of the most difficult on the field, which is why every official must possess a certain set of qualities to help them manage the game effectively.

Here, we run through everything a referee needs in their locker to ensure they gain the players’ respect and, ultimately, do a good job of officiating a game of football.

Good Communication Skills

Every referee must be able to communicate with the players effectively. This allows them to convey their decision and, when necessary, explain why it was made.

As well as being able to communicate clearly, referees must also avoid getting into arguments or altercations with players, who may show frustration towards officials. Being able to keep control is another part of communication that every official must master.

Assertive

As well as having good communication skills, it’s also important to be assertive. This means having the confidence to make decisions and stick to them, despite the inevitable protests from the players.

A weak referee can be manipulated and influenced by players, so officiating a game effectively requires a certain level of confidence that not all of us possess.

Fitness

Referees need to be on top of the action at all times, so it’s no surprise they cover as much if not more ground than many of the players!

So to referee a game of football well, having good fitness is a non-negotiable. So if you’re considering putting on the black uniform then make sure you’re in good condition as you’ll struggle to keep up if not!

Good Eyesight

If a referee wants to run the rule over the on-the-field action, they’ll need to be able to see what’s going on properly! For this, good eyesight is crucial.

So if you plan to become a referee then hopefully you’ll be possessed with at least competent eyesight. If not, you might need some contact lenses or glasses before you take to the field!

Good Referee Kit

Last but not least, all referees will need a good kit to help them officiate a match.

Considering the physical intensity of officiating with referees often running long distances, it makes sense to have a kit that’s made of materials that are both high-quality and breathable.

This should the body regulate its temperature better and keep you comfortable and sweat-free.

We stock a range of premium-quality kits. So if you’re on the lookout for a good uniform to take charge of games, why not invest in a Macron or Nike referee kit.
